An Overactive Imagination

When we first bought our home, there was a sagging, splintered, 20 year old deck sitting on top of a row of storage closets at the back of the house. Kevin ripped out all the storage (good thing he did, it was all wet and rotten inside) and then we cut a hole in the brick wall and installed a sliding glass door so that we could have access from our bedroom to what will someday be a lovely cobbled patio. A couple of weeks ago, a construction crew ripped off the old deck and built us a sturdy, non-sagging deck. Today, the landscapers began excavating all the dirt from under the deck so that we will have enough head room for a patio. Here is what the back of the house looked like this morning before the landscapers got here:

Now the backyard is teeming with backhoes and ditch witches, and the area under the deck is a big, muddy pit. I have been hanging out in the house, out of the workers' way, trying to keep the dogs from stroking out about all the activity in their backyard. At one point, one of the landscapers rang the doorbell to tell me that they had unearthed something concerning. I immediately blurted out, "Did you find a dead body?" He seemed a little surprised at my question, and said, "Um, no, we just found 2 big intake pipes from the old septic system...we haven't pulled the caps off yet, so I guess there could be a dead body in one of them." Yikes, did I actually seem so disappointed about the lack of corpses in my backyard that he felt the need to give me a little hope that one still might be uncovered? I'm kind of paranoid now, thinking that if a corpse actually is exhumed, the landscapers are going to tell the police how I wouldn't shut up about finding a dead body, and that will make me seem most suspicious indeed!

Ha, Ha - very funny Emily. Be glad you don't live in Britain - they constantly seem to be finding bodies buried in back gardens. And the police are very suspicious and very good. Oh, Oh have I just gotten real news mixed up with Daniel and Pasco ? :)
So good luck with the area under the deck - it may prove very difficult to make that space attractive. You may end up building an out-room/shed under there.

LOL Emily! That's a great story! I have this whole image now of Columbo pacing around your living room, rubbing his forehead, and saying, "But, Emily, now, the FIRST thing you asked the gardener was did he find a dead body. Now, that's not a normal question, is it? You must have known something..."

If anything weird happens, blame the dogs.

The deck looks great, BTW.

Good Lord Emily - such a thing is entirely possible around here. Of course, it would probably be a Native American or something. We do live in their native land from before the Revolutionary War or so they say. Remember Last of The Mohicans?

The renovations look great and I am looking forward to taking you up on the lunch by the lake offer.

hugs to all-

Robin

Ian, we were worried about the space too, but so far, so good...a lot of dirt has been excavated and we already have a stone wall erected and pavers installed. Pictures to follow shortly. And are there seriously bodies buried in English gardens...I guess all that natural fertilization would explain why English gardens are so gorgeous!
Victoria, now that we are a week into this project, I think the more appropriate word is tedious. I just can't wait to get my backyard back!
Michele, the poor dogs are already blamed for so much...the cats do very naughty, destructive things and take off, the dogs come over to check out the damage, then I come down the stairs and catch the poor dogs who aren't smart enough to leave the scene. It's a rough life!
Robin, I suppose if a pre-Revolutionary war body was found, I'd have a pretty air-tight alibi, not being born until 1976 and all! Emily
