I woke up this morning, went to the kitchen to have some cereal, looked up and saw a little bat hanging in the doorway to the dining room. All the cats were standing underneath it, looking up, licking their lips and making their "I want flesh!" chattering noises. I'm very proud of myself, because I was cool, calm and collected, baby! I grabbed a bag of cat treats, lured the cats into the utility room and shut the door, then I grabbed a step stool and a couple of potholders, opened the front door, gently scooped the bat up and set it outside. I think the poor little thing was in shock, because instead of swooping away to freedom, it just sat there spitting at me. I know a photo op when it hisses in my face, so here is the photographic evidence of my crazy morning:

Oh, I love bats! (Weird, I know.) How lucky to get to see one up close and even get some good pictures! (Even if it is rather cranky.)
He musta got lost on his way to Gotham City..lol..no worries..we too have lots of bats, here on the farm
You are the bravest girl I know! You know how you feel about bugs.....well, that's my general demeanor towards bats. Wow, what bravery!
Emily, NO WAY! I immediately thought of when you told Victoria and I the story of how you once rescued a bat in a similar situation and I was totally impressed. And now you've done it again! You're a bat magnet!
Hey, when you become a Batman magnet, call me. :-)
Awesome photo. Just awesome.
Ha! Like Michele I immediately thought of the bat rescue story you told. How odd that you would have two encounters! I don't think I've ever even seen one up close (besides tv).
Keera, I love them too--anything that eats its weight in bugs every day is great with me!
Rosemary, I'm sure you do have lots of bats there--if I remember correctly, Iowa is full of bugs for them to eat!
Jen, I'm fine with anything that has 4 legs or less, even when those legs are attached to spooky little wings!
Michele & Victoria, I thought this would remind you of that story of my bat rescue heroics! Not only did I put this little guy outside, but the next morning we heard some scratching sounds--there was another bat behind a picture in the living room, so Kevin got to see my mad bat rescue skillz in action! He suggested I start a "Bat of the Day" website, but I don't think that would have the mass appeal of "The Daily Kitten!"

This little creatures give me the creeps, sad really because they are harmless are they not?
Joanne, bats get a bad reputation for spreading rabies, but I think that is entirely blown out of proportion. Most of them are healthy little creatures who gobble up bugs by the dozen. I think they're really cute, but I also find mice adorable!
